      RECOMMENDED ACTION NOTEBOOK

Actions For the Week of January 24 through 30

      Note:

A bill has been introduced by Congressmen Rahall and Whitfield that would repeal the most troublesome aspects of the Burns rider. We need to support this effort and urge our own congressmen to take similar action. (To read the bill, click here.)

      Goals for This Week:

      1. Contact Congressmen Rahall and Whitfield and show your support. This can be easily done by email through their Congressional web sites.
        • Congressman Rahall's Web Site
        • Congressman Whitfield's Web Site

      2. Contact your Congressional Representative and urge him/her to support HR-297. (If you are using stop wild horse slaughter post cards, just write "Support HR-297" legibly somewhere on the card.)

      3. Send post cards to your Senators urging them to repeal the Burns rider. If HR-297 passes the House it will then have to be passed by the Senate. If HR-297 bogs down for any reason, we need a similar effort taking place in the Senate.

      4. Plan at least one "post card party" this week and motivate five additional people to send cards.

      5. Find the Washington, DC addresses and phone numbers for your Senators here:

Ask your elected representatives specifically what they are doing to repeal the Burns Wild Horse Sale Rider.

      6. Contact the Dept. of Interior

Phone and/or Write the Secretary of Interior Gayle Norton and demand that BLM stop withholding older horses from adoption.

          Secretary Gale Norton
          Department of the Interior
          1849 C St. NW
          Washington, DC 20240

          Phone: 202-208-3100

          Fax: 202-208-6956

Ask the Secretary specifically what the department is doing to protect the older horses from slaughter and why they have been removed from adoption lists.

      7. Apply Economic Pressure

Support the Quit Beefin' beef boycott. If unhappy members of the beef industry are willing to support a boycott until the issue of public lands ranching versus wild horses is resolved, it is imperative that we support them. Eat Something Else!!!
