Wild Horse Protection Amendment Scheduled.
Rahall / Whitfield Amendment will ban wild horse slaughter.

The following information was confirmed by a phone call from Congressman Rahall's staff.

Congressmen Nick Rahall and Ed Whitfield have introduced an amendment to the Interior Appropriations Bill that is scheduled to be heard in the House of Representatives on Thursday, May 19th. The recent slaughter of 41 formerly protected wild horses and BLM's resulting suspension of sale authority have made it imperative that some language be introduced that would restore slaughter prohibitions on wild horses and burros.

The amendment will prohibit expenditures of public funds for the sale and slaughter of protected wild horses and burros. This amendment will be considered with a recorded vote. Americans will soon know which Members of Congress support and oppose wild horse slaughter.

It is important that interested citizens contact their Congressional Representatives and express their opinions about this amendment. Please remember that this amendment speaks only to the issue of sale and slaughter. Other issues relating to wild horses and burros will still need to be taken up in other venues.

Please contact your Representative before Thursday, May 19th, and preferably on Monday, May 16th. Please phone and submit an email statement.
