About Horse Slaughter

Posted August 24, 2006.

  • The majority of all Americans support the end of horse slaughter in recent polls

  • More than 65,000 horses were slaughtered last year and thousands were exported for slaughter in other countries

  • There has been no increase in abuse (mistreatment of "unwanted" horses) in California where horse slaughter is banned and therefore no increase is expected with the banning of horse slaughter

  • It is not the old, sick, and lame who are going to slaughter – 92.3% of the horses arriving at slaughter plants are in “good” condition according to USDA.

  • Approximately 690,000 horses die annually in this country (10% of an estimated population of 6.9 million). That means that approximately 99% of these horse deaths do not go to slaughter.

Bottom line is that horse slaughter is not a humane way to end a horse’s life.
