      RECOMMENDED ACTION NOTEBOOK

Actions For the Week of February 7 through 13

      Note:

Coming next month: March 7th is National Capitol Hill Day for Horses. All persons available are encouraged to attend. There will be important speakers, legislators and their staff personnel available to listen to and to interact with. If you can make it, join the effort.

(For information, please view the Capitol Hill Day for Horses notice.)

It is understood that many people will not have the time and/or money to travel to Washington D.C. Therefore WHB advocates should plan local activities for March 7th in which supporters in their areas can participate. (With appropriate prior notice, some school districts will allow students to participate as a civics field trip.)

      Goals for This Week:

      1. Poll your friends, allied horse enthusiasts and other WHB supporters to see who is available to visit your Congressional Representative's Office on Monday, March 7th.

      2. Make an appointment to meet with your Representative's local staff. (Do this early since many appointment times at many Representatives' offices tend to fill up a month in advance.)

      3. Determine if students will be allowed to participate, and if so, assign competent volunteers to organize parental permissions, carpools, etc.

      4. Organize talking points and print out supporting information.

(For downloadable resources, please visit the Resource Center .)

      5. Present and hand deliver letters from wild horse and burro supporters from within the Representative's district. (If you collect letters from residents of other Congressional districts, please contact the Legislative Activities Coordinator so that they can be forwarded to the groups that are going to those offices.)

      6. Make this a fun, positive, educational and cooperative experience. In most cases, our Congressional Representatives are not the enemy!

      7. If you are refused an appointment on March 7th, plan on assembling outside the Representative's office a few minutes prior to the office opening, carry informational pickets and handout information, and inivite the media to attend. Again, convey a positive attitude. We're the good guys in this fight and we need to maintain that decorum.

      8. Be sure to inform the Legislative Activities Workgroup of your planned activities so the workgroup can keep the activities coordinated and make sure that you have all the necessary talking points, press releases and supporting documentation.

Please contact Legislative Activities Coordinator Joycelyn King at [email protected] or 775-852-8187 for support and coordination of your March 7th activities.

You need to start early to ensure an appointment with your Representative's staff on March 7th. Please get started organizing this activity now. The WHB Planning Group and AOWHA will provide you with the ncessary informational resources between now and March 7th.
