      RECOMMENDED ACTION NOTEBOOK

Actions For the Month of November, 2005
      Anti-Slaughter Legislation Watered Down!

It has been about a year since Senator Conrad Burns snuck through his stealth rider potentially exposing thousands of formerly protected wild horses to unlimited sale and slaughter. As most of you know, many have been slaughtered in get rich quick schemes.

Since that time we have experienced nearly a year of sleazy politics, back room deals and stealth changes to laws that Congress had passed with bipartisan support.

As a result of these special interest tactics, the horse protection battle still goes on. Congress has to pass a law that can't be altered by committees in back rooms, hidden from public view.

(For a chronology of what has actually taken place, please visit America's Effort to End Horse Slaughter.)

There are two bills currently before Congress, one in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate, that if passed would put an end to the smoke and mirrors and slaughter of America's horses. These bills are H.R. 297, presented to the House and S. 1915, presented to the Senate.

Make no mistake about it. The special interests do not want to see these bills move forward. It will only take a massive continuation of public pressure to keep these bills from dying at the hands of a few powerful special interest politicians. Unfortunately this is how politics works in America today.

However we still have a voice and here is what you can do.

      1. Identify your two Senators. You can do so by going to www.senate.gov and use the lookup service provided on the Senate web site.

      2. Determine if your Senators are cosponsors of S. 1915. (You can view the list of cosponsors by clicking Here.)

      3. Use the contact information from your Senators' web sites to phone, email and (snail) mail them. Explain that you are opposed to horse slaughter and that you support Senate Bill 1915.

        • If a Senator is a cosponsor of S. 1915 then please thank him/her for being a cosponsor.

        • If a Senator is not a cosponsor of S. 1915 then urge him/her to cosponsor the bill.

      4. Identify your Congressional Representative. You can do so by going to www.house.gov and use the lookup service provided on the House web site, using your zip code.

      5. Determine if your Congressman is a cosponsors of H.R. 503. (You can view the list of cosponsors by clicking Here.)

      6. Use the contact information from your Congressman's web site to phone, email and (snail) mail him/her. Explain that you are opposed to horse slaughter and that you support House Resolution 503.

        • If your Congressman is a cosponsor of H.R. 503 then please thank him/her for being a cosponsor.

        • If your Congressman is not a cosponsor of H.R. 503 then urge him/her to cosponsor the bill.

      7. Please forward this message to everyone you know that cares about horses.

We must be heard for this effort to have any chance of succeeding. It will only take a few minutes for each of us to make our voices heard. REAL AMERICAN'S DON'T EAT HORSES! Please help put an end to this barbaric practice and the political games that support it.
